Long before the pyramids of Giza, Egypt’s architects were experimenting with stone. At Saqqara, the Step Pyramid of Djoser and the colonnaded corridors around it mark a turning point in monumental building. At Memphis, once the capital of the Old Kingdom, we meet the Alabaster Sphinx and colossal statues in an open-air museum. At Dahshur, the Bent Pyramid, with much of its smooth casing still in place, shows how the shape of a true pyramid was worked out. Together the three sites trace the story of how the pyramid was invented.
